Then she opened her eyes and it was dark. She was in the bed beneath the quilt in the little room where she slept, and it was well into the night. It was astonishing to her–who so frequently woke the men who fell asleep in her bed, yet who herself never fell asleep no matter how much she drank, unless she passed out–that he had been able to pick her up without waking her and put her to bed.
